Notes Newsletter — Issue 02

What if you don't need to get it right?

You don't need certainty to trust yourself.

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from believing you have to get everything right.

The right decision.

The right words.

The right timing.

The right response.

The right version of yourself.

You can spend an extraordinary amount of energy trying to eliminate the possibility of getting it wrong. And because you’re capable, it often looks like diligence.

You research.

You prepare.

You think things through.

You ask for another opinion.

You wait until you feel certain.

You tell yourself you’re being responsible.

Meanwhile, your life is sitting there waiting for you to actually live it. Perfectionism can be incredibly sophisticated. It doesn’t always look like obsessing over a tiny detail.

  1. Sometimes it looks like never letting yourself be seen until you feel ready.
  2. Sometimes it looks like constantly moving the finish line.
  3. Sometimes it looks like being so afraid of making the wrong decision that you make no decision at all.
  4. And sometimes it looks like achieving something you worked incredibly hard for and immediately finding the next thing that needs fixing.

For me, it's #4 (without celebrating the achievement at all).

You don't get to experience your own life when every moment is being evaluated. At some point, you have to decide that you can trust yourself to handle being wrong. That distinction matters.

Self-trust doesn't mean you suddenly know exactly what to do. It means you know that whatever happens next, you will meet yourself there.

You can make a decision.

Learn.

Adjust.

Try again.

You don't need to predict every outcome before you move. You need enough trust in yourself to know that you can respond to reality when it arrives.

So today, notice where you’re waiting for certainty.

Where are you telling yourself:

I just need a little more information.

I need to think about it.

I’m not quite ready.

I want to make sure I get this right.

Maybe you do need more information. Or maybe you’re trying to make uncertainty disappear before you give yourself permission to move.

For me... it's practicing that I don't need to know the how in order to do.

Those are very different things.

You don't need a perfect decision.

You need a decision you are willing to own.

Take gentle care,
JM
